The Backpack Safety - What are the basic rules?
Lots of kids brings their school backpacks every day and pediatrician, physical therapist and the parents are reporting everyday about the increasing number of school going kids complaining about back, neck and shoulder pain plus the numbness in their arms and hands. This is being attributed to the children lugging with them heavy loads of school books in their backpacks and often not following the backpack safety rules using the bag improperly.

Yet do not scrap your kids backpacks and run out to buy a sling bag or a briefcase type of bag. Evidence says these are even more harmful than the bag. So what should the parents to do? The backpacks if made correctly, worn properly not packed and packed correctly are just fine. A friendly backpack will have wide padded shoulder straps a padded back and a waist line belt.
This will take care of most of the problems. The straps on this type of bag avoid the pinching of the shoulders by narrow padded straps on other backpacks. The waist belt and padded bag help to reduce the bouncing of the bag on the back. This reduces repetitive impact injury. Some of the bags even have a chest belt and size straps to stabilize the load.
This type of school bag is obviously the better choice, because it uses the back and abdominal muscles, the two strongest muscle systems in the body properly. A heavy backpack, incorrectly worn, can pull the child back so the leans forward to compensate for the pull. This can compress and possibly damage the vertebrae, causing back and neck pain.
This leaning forward also tends to cause the kid to roll her shoulders inward. This with the forward lean can also compress the lungs and cause problems for asthmatic kids. Quality backpacks are made of sturdy material, have padded wide shoulder straps, a padded backs, waist, and chest belts. These extra belts help to put some of the weights bearing on the legs and hips. You have the right bags, now you have to make sure your kid knows how to use it properly.
Be aware that price is not always an indication of quality, nor do lower prices necessarily mean a poor product.
